Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is situated on the most southerly headland of mainland Australia. As well as being a navigational aid, it now serves as an important automatic weather station. Huge swells, coming unabated from the African continent, lash these shores where the lighthouse stands.
But here, I am in the inside passage, protected from the main brunt of the raging sea. I love lighthouses. They convey a message of safety in the midst of turbulent times, warning us to steer clear of potential danger. As I wandered through the old buildings, I wondered about the stories that would have been told by families who once lived and worked in this very small community. We waited hours at this location for the light to be just right. After sunset, we were rewarded with a golden twilight glow that brought the whole scene to life
